Observation Narrative
The maritime forests at Kiptopeake are some of the more mature and deciduous on the Eastern Shore, containing mixtures of several oaks, hickories, and black cherry, in addition to the ubiquitous loblolly pine. This plot is located about 150 m inland from the beach, on a flat terrace behind a long bluff subtending the Chesapeak Bay. It documents a stand in which Quercus falcata and Carya alba are the leading canopy dominants. Also present are Quercus alba, Q. phellos, Carya pallida, and Pinus taeda. Prunus serotina, Ilex opaca, and Ilex vomitoria occur in the understory. Typical of this type of vegetation, herbaceous plants are sparse.
