Observation Narrative
The maritime forests at Kiptopeake are some of the more mature and deciduous on the Eastern Shore, containing mixtures of several oaks, hickories, and black cherry, in addition to the ubiquitous loblolly pine. This plot is located about one km NNW of KISP004 on the same flat terrace behind a bluff subtending the Chesapeake Bay. Here, Quercus falcata and Pinus taeda are the leading canopy dominants, with Ilex opaca and Cornus florida most important in the understory. Also present are Quercus alba, Q. phellos, Carya pallida, and Pinus taeda. Prunus serotina, Ilex opaca, and Ilex vomitoria occur in the understory. Additional shrubs and small trees include Prunus serotina, Callicarpa americana, and Aralia spinosa. Herbs are sparse.
