Observation Narrative
This plot documents a very unusual, Eastern Shore bald cypress stand in the upper reaches of a short tidal creek. The stand is situated just above the limits of tidal influence and appears to be permanently saturated by groundwater seepage with braided drainage. The largest bald cypress trees approach 80 cm DBH and may be quite old. A fairly diverse (for the region) assemblage of shrubs and herbs is associated. This is the only known maritime forest on the Eastern Shore that contains bald cypress, which is rare in this region due the pervasive influence of salt spray and brackish water over most of the peninsula.
