Observation Narrative
This stand of maritime forest is located on sandy level ground at the top of a eroding bluff overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Short, spreading Quercus falcata and Prunus serotina more of less dominate the stand, with some Pinus taeda also present. Myrica pensylvanica is the most important shrub, forming locally dense patches. This stand is more open and appears drier than the pine and oak-dominated forest of the high ridge to the east. It is not clear whether these differences are related to environmental factors or human disturbance, or both.
