Observation Narrative ? This is one of many small sinkhole ponds of the Grafton Ponds complex. It was formerly a woodland pond, but the mortality of several willow oaks and sweetgum post Hurricane Isabel has changed it to an herbaceous wetland. It seems likely that the herbaceous assemblage was similar in composition to the present stand prior to the tree mortality, but has likely increased greatly in density due to increased illumination.

Disturbance Data:
Disturbance Type ?Disturbance Intensity ?Disturbance Comment ?
unknown   Historical ditch from pond to road may influence hydrology. Young pine regeneration on pond margin.
unknown   Several large dead trees on ground - willow oak and sweetgum; mortality possibly resulted from stresses associated with Hurricane Isabel in 2003
