Observation Narrative
Forested seepage swamp in ravine bottom, about 35 meters wide and continuing up and downstream from plot location. The vegetation abruptly changes to Oak - Beech / Heath Forest on the adjacent, steep, slopes. Several sand-bottomed channels meander through the swamp and were flowing with water at the time of survey. Moss covered logs and hummocks are prevalent between the channels. This swamp is likely influenced by calcareous groundwater and contains many characteristic nutrient-demanding species; yet, pronounced acidophiles such as Magnolia virginiana and Kalmia latifolia are also present, rooted on acidic soils and hummocks along the edges of the wetland.
