Observation Narrative
Mature stand of Non-Riverine Flatwood / Swamp Forest. There is no sign of hydrologic alteration, and invasive plants were not noted. Large Quercus michauxii are scattered throughout the stand, and there is a high density of seedlings, mainly Acer rubrum and Quercus michauxii. The tall, woody grass, Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta, is dominant in the shrub stratum. The ground layer is generally sparse, with various species of Carex, woody seedlings, and other grasses and forbs. Very old tip-up mounds occur throughout the stand (perhaps caused by a hurricane or other wind-throw event) and provide suitable drainage for rooting of Fagus grandifolia, some of which are now quite large. Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forest dominated by Fagus grandifolia occurs on larger elevated areas within the stand. [In the field, Arundinaria was incorrectly recorded as a non-woody species. The database has been corrected to consider Arundinaria as a broad-leaved, evergreen shrub, 1m tall. ]
Dry and well-drained at time of survey, but with evidence of standing water.
0-2 cm leaf litter
