Observation Narrative
The plot is located in an extensive forested depression on an elevated terrace about 150 m from the main channel of the Nottoway River. The sample site is a relatively small area that has a particularly high density of large trees. The canopy is quite diverse and composed primarily of five species of hydrophytic oaks (Quercus laurifolia, Q. lyrata, Q. michauxii, Q. pagoda, Quercus phellos), with a sixth species (Q. palustris) occurring outside the plot. The shrub and herb layers are quite sparse. The stand grades abruptly into Loblolly Pine - Hardwood forest upslope and an elevated berm separates this flat from the active first-bottom floodplain. The depression was flooded with less than 25 cm of standing water at the time of this survey.
