Observation Narrative
Plot is on a very high, sandy levee adjacent to the Nottoway River channel, where there is a thin strip of young deciduous forest in front of a planted pine stand. The topography is uneven and the trees are small in stature and diameter, many of them regenerated from stump sprouts. Carya pallida is the dominant tree and shrub with a lesser component of Quercus nigra. The herb stratum is very diverse with a mixture of species typical of well-drained floodplains and dry sandhill sites.
