Observation Narrative
Plot located in a narrow band of mature floodplain forest on the backside of a levee along the Banister River. The canopy is open from multiple disturbances that have created canopy gaps. The largest of these has been recently created by the death of a very large Quercus shumardii that was still standing. Currently, the overstory is composed of large Quercus michauxii and Liquidambar styraciflua, along with younger Carya cordiformis, Quercus shumardii, Platanus occidentalis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Celtis occidentalis. Ilex decidua and Viburnum prunifolium are the most abundant shrubs, while Chasmanthium latifolium patch-dominates the herb layer. Microstegium vimineum is actively invading this area and becoming abundant due to the canopy-opening and soil-exposing disturbances.
