Observation Narrative
Sampling site is a low levee along the Willis River. This habitat is slightly higher than, and grades into, a lower and wetter (but not inundated) terrace along the broad floodplain. The forest is of mixed composition with Platanus occidentalis, Celtis occidentalis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Ulmus americana, Juglans nigra, all present in the canopy or sub-canopy. A large Quercus palustris is rooted just outside the plot. There are many Acer negundo seedlings, but no large trees of that species were seen. The herb layer has moderate cover by exotics. Plot location was chosen, in part, because it has fewer exotics than the rest of the floodplain. According to DOF, this stand was last cut around 1944, but some of the trees in the area of the plot may pre-date that harvest.
