Observation Narrative
Mature deciduous forest in a shallow, linear swale on floodplain terrace of the Chickahominy River. The site is similar to that of HANO015 across the river, but is lower-lying with heavier soils that show evidence of impeded drainage. This habitat is temporarily inundated 4-5 times a year with water persistent for a time after flooding, according to landowner Irvine Wilson. The forest contains a mixture of hydrophytic oaks, Acer rubrum, and Liquidambar styraciflua, with an understory consisting mostly of Carpinus caroliniana and Ilex decidua. Quercus phellos is the most numerous overstory tree, followed by Q. michauxii. The herb layer is dominated by wet-site graminoids (Cinna arundinacea, Carex spp.).
