Observation Narrative
The sampling site is located in a narrow, well-drained floodplain along the north side of the Appomattox River at its confluence with Jenkins Creek. Dept. of Forestry data indicate this stand originated in 1880, although few, if any, trees appear to be that old. The overall stand is a mixed forest of Liriodendron tulipifera, Betula nigra, Celtis occidentalis, Carya cordiformis, Ulmus americana, and Juglans nigra, with Carpinus caroliniana dominant in the shrub layer. There is good recruitment of Carya cordiformis and some nutrient demanding herbs are present. However, the herbaceous flora is somewhat weedy, and species such as Betula nigra suggest past clearing / disturbance.
