Observation Narrative
This plot is located just 75 meters south of CARO004 but differs dramatically in its floristic composition. Its habitat is a narrow, very wet, seasonally flooded swale at the back edge of the Mattaponi River floodplain. A linear plot configuration (10 x 40 meters) was used to maintain environmental and floristic homogeneity of the sample. Unlike CARO004, hydrophytic oaks are unimportant (Quercus lyrata is a minor species) and Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica are the principal trees. Several additional Acer rubrum overhang the plot. The understory is sparse, and the herb layer moderately dense with hydrophytic forbs (Saururus cernuus, Lycopus rubellus, Boehmeria cylindrica) and sedges. The principal sedges differ from those in CARO004 and include Carex tribuloides, C. seorsa, C. crinita, and C. louisianica.
