Observation Narrative
Bald cypress swamp at the back of the floodplain of the Chickahominy River, near the upland slope. The canopy is dominated by medium- to fairly large-diameter Taxodium distichum with an understory of Acer rubrum, and very open shrub and herb strata. The swamp was dry at the date of this survey, but ground water was only 20 cm below the ground surface. The bald cypress knees were up to 1.3 meters in height. This swamp grades into a beaver impacted area on the elevated floodplain and continuing to the river, where many large Quercus pagoda and Quercus michauxii are dead and the canopy is becoming very open.
