Observation Narrative
Levee forest adjacent to the main Nottoway River channel. Medium-age oaks (mostly Quercus michauxii) and Liquidambar styraciflua, along with an occasional Carya ovata and Celtis occidentalis, dominate the overstory of this forest. Ilex opaca is abundant as a tall shrub and Toxicodendron radicans and other vines cover the trunks of tree and climb into the canopy. The herb layer is a mix of Carex species occurring with grasses and forbs common in alluvial habitats.
