Observation Narrative
Along with CHEC004 and CHEC005, this plot was sampled to capture the variation in an extensive wet flatwoods in the Embayed Region of far southeastern Virginia. The hydrology of this habitat could be described as seasonally saturated; it is never flooded but probably remains saturated most of the year by perched groundwater, and has shallow ponding in depressions during wet periods. In the area of this plot, the stand is young and represents even-aged, post-logging regeneration. The largest trees are 40-60 cm in diameter, but most are smaller. Quercus nigra is fairly common in mixture with Quercus michauxii, Acer rubrum, and Liquidambar styraciflua. Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta is dense and averages 1.5 meters tall, dominating the shrub strata. Herbaceous plants are sparse.
