Observation Narrative
Along with CHEC003 and CHEC005, this plot was sampled to capture the variation in an extensive wet flatwoods in the Embayed Region of far southeastern Virginia. The hydrology of this habitat could be described as seasonally saturated, with perched groundwater and temporary shallow surficial ponding of water during wet periods. In this plot, medium-sized Quercus pagoda and Q. michauxii are the most common oaks, with occasional Q. nigra and Q. laurifolia. The shrub stratum is very open. Arundinaria occurs only in the low shrub / herb layer, along with low-cover sedges, ferns, and other forbs and woody seedlings.
