Observation Narrative
Along with CHEC003 and CHEC004, this plot was sampled to capture the variation in an extensive wet flatwoods in the Embayed Region of far southeastern Virginia. The hydrology of this habitat could be described as seasonally saturated, with perched groundwater and temporary shallow surficial ponding of water during wet periods. In this plot, Quercus michauxii is the most important overstory tree, occurring in a fairly mixed stand with Q. laurifolia, Q. pagoda, Q. nigra, and Carya ovata. Acer rubrum and Carpinus caroliniana are common in the understory. This forest is relatively young and even-aged, with the largest trees 40-55 cm in diameter. The herb stratum is patchy and composed of graminoids, ferns, and woody seedlings.
