Observation Narrative
Slough behind riverfront levee, adjacent to the Nottoway River. This area was last logged around 1890 and fairly large Nyssa aquatica and Taxodium distichum (mostly 60 to 120 cm DBH) co-dominate the stand. Fraxinus caroliniana strongly dominates the understory. The sample has a well-developed herb layer of Leersia lenticularis and various forbs that are adapted to seasonally flooded, "draw-down" habitats. The occurrence of a large patch of Echinodorus cordifolius is notable.
