Observation Narrative
Plot situated on a slightly elevated, linear ridge that lies perhaps a meter or two above the surrounding deeply flooded and extensive baldcypress - water tupelo backswamps upstream from Cypress Bridge on the Nottoway River. This habitat is probably inundated most of the winter and spring but exposed during much of the growing season. It supports an open stand of medium- to large-diameter Quercus lyrata, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Taxodium distichum. The understory is quite open and the herb layer varies from patchy to dense with Leersia lenticularis and various sedges, including the rare Carex crus-corvi. The elevated area adjacent to the sample has been disturbed by wind-throws and flood damage, making the vegetation thick and scrubby.
