Observation Narrative
This plot captures a somewhat enigmatic forest occurring in a small, narrow stream bottom with braided channels. The site was dry at the time of this survey. Overall hydrology is uncertain; the site appears to be saturated for extended periods but is unlikely to experience prolonged inundation except perhaps shallowly in a few depressed areas. Mature Taxodium distichum and Quercus laurifolia are the tallest trees, growing over Acer rubrum, Nyssa biflora, Fraxinus pensylvanica. The herb stratum composition is typical of acidic, saturated habitats. The adjacent upland to the east is recently clear cut and the western slopes are forested with mesic hardwoods.
