Observation Narrative
This site is an extensive, seasonally flooded bottomland in a braided section of the Blackwater River. The plot captures an especially mature portion of the forest adjacent to a deep channel that was dry on the date of this survey. The stand has many large Nyssa aquatica and Taxodium distichum over 100 cm DBH. This is a fairly typical bald cypress - tupelo swamp, with an understory mostly of Fraxinus caroliniana and Boehmeria cylindrica, Leersia lenticularis, Saururus cernuus, and other characteristic swamp species in the herb layer.
