Observation Narrative
This plot represents a forested, small-stream bottomland with pronounced hummock and hollow topography and braided channels. The hydrology is ambiguus -- poorly drained and sometimes flooded, but clearly seasonally flooded only in the lowest depressions. The water marks on the trees were about 35 cm above the hollow bottoms. A narrow 10 X 40 meter configuration was used to keep the plot in the lowest portion of the bottom. The forest is medium aged with excellent recruitment of Nyssa biflora and Fraxinus pensylvanica. The herb stratum is lush in places, but with areas of unvegetated ground.
