Observation Narrative
Isolated depression about two acres in size and surrounded by upland pine forest managed by prescribed burning for red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. The plot captures the least disturbed portion of the depression. The pond was dry on the date of the survey, but water marks on the trees had a maximum height of 30 cm. above the soil surface. The canopy is quite open and dominated by small-diameter, short-statured trees, primarily Nyssa biflora and Liquidambar styraciflua. Some trees are coppice-sprouted. Litter dominates the ground cover, with patches of ferns and graminoids comprising the herb stratum.
