Observation Narrative
Plot is on the pond rim and upper edge of the basin of pond S105-4 in an open forest / woodland. Tom Rawinski dubbed this pond "The Savanna" because most of the wetland consists of well-spaced trees with locally dense graminoid patches underneath. The area of the sample is dominated by several good-sized Quercus lyrata, with Saccharum baldwinii forming patchy cover on the western side, where the ground is covered by dead (dried-out) non-sphagnous moss. On the eastern side of the plot, the ground lacks herbaceous plants and is covered by sticks and leaf litter; there, the pond slopes up slightly to an abrupt transition with upland forest (just beyond edge of sample). Shrubs are virtually absent from the entire sample.
