Observation Narrative
Plot captures an open woodland in an elevated depression northwest of a larger and deeper pond (N105-17, aka North Mabeii Pond). The two ponds are hydrologically connected when fully inundated, but the sampled habitat lies perhaps a meter or two in elevation above the basin of N105-17. Consequently, the vegetation in the two areas varies significantly; whereas N105-17 supports a depauperate forest of Quercus lyrata with virtually no herbaceous plants, the higher, sampled depression supports a drier, more diverse woodland dominated by Quercus phellos and a large clone of Carex joorii.
