Observation Narrative ? This plot is situated in an isolated, open wooded depression pond that lies within an extensive "flatwoods" managed for pine silviculture. The wetland was avoided in the most recent timber harvests but has been cut over in the past. This pond is hydrologically connected to another pond ca. 100 meters to the southwest (see PRIG002) by an area of wet, shrubby forest. The sample captures the most open, central part of the pond and a small portion of the shrubbier south rim. Dried sphagnum covers the east side. Water marks on trees range from 35 to 48 cm above the ground. Shrubs are confined to the edge and to slightly higher "islands" around tree bases. Herb cover is quite sparse, although several species (Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Carex joorii, Woodwardia virginica, Saccharum baldwinii) attain 1 to 5% cover.
