Observation Narrative
This plot was located in a broad, shallow basin located at the very head of a non-alluvial bottomland. The habitat is funcationally a basin wetland and appears to be connected to the downstream drainage only at extreme high water levels. A logging road crossing, south of the sampling location, caused minor hydrologic alterations. Water marks on trees ranged from 30 to 45 cm from the ground. This swamp forest was cut over several decades ago and all the trees are small (30 cm or less in diameter). Nyssa biflora dominates the canopy, while Leucothoe racemosa and Vaccinium formosum contribute most of the patchy shrub cover. The herbaceous diversity is excellent for this type of habitat.
