Observation Narrative ? Plot is located in one of several linear, depressional wetlands that are interlaced through oak flatwoods and pine plantations. Plot captures the edge of the depression, with Sphagnum occurring throughout in small patches. Seasonal flooding here is shallow and of relatively short duration, probably mostly during the winter and spring. Wind damage is frequent, and Smilax occurs evenly throughout as a short or scrambling shrub. The largest and oldest trees are medium-sized Quercus pagoda and Q. phellos; Acer rubrum and Liquidambar styraciflua are more abundant and dominate the understory, although there is a surprising amount of young oak recruitment. The herb flora is sparse.
