Observation Narrative
This plot is located in a deep, seasonally flooded slough / swale that runs for some distance through a broad floodplain before emptying into the Nottoway River. This part of the slough supports an old stand of Nyssa aquatica forest - much older than the surrounding, mostly successional forest that probably regenerated after clear-cutting less than 50 years ago. Many of the dominant canopy trees here are over 100 cm DBH, with some over 200 cm; some of the DBH measurements were estimated with a Biltmore stick because of dense cover by poison-ivy vines. Shrubby Fraxinus caroliniana dominates the understory, while the fairly dense herb layer is composed mostly of perennial swamp and "draw-down" species.
0-10+ cm: in hollow - gray clay with orange mottling at surface
0-10+ cm: on hummock - orange-brown silt loam
Swamp drawn down, but soil moist, at time of survey.
