Observation Narrative
This plot is located on a narrow "neck" of bottomland at the top of an extensive peninsular swamp enclosed by the Blackwater River on the east and the Nottoway River on the west and south, just north of their confluence at the VA/NC state line. Sand and silt deposited in this "neck" have raised the elevation of this area slightly above the more extensive peat-based, wind-tidally influenced swamps that cover most of the peninsula. The combination of mineral soil substrate and higher elevation that excludes wind tides supports a classic, alluvial baldcypress - water tupelo swamp that distinctly differs in structure and composition from the thick, acidophilic tidal swamps downstream.
