Observation Narrative
Plot located in a long, meandering, seasonally flooded slough in the broad, Meherrin River floodplain, about 350 meters from the main river channel. Elevated areas adjacent to the slough support mixed hardwoods with hydrophytic oaks (Quercus pagoda, Q. michauxii). The whole area was logged about 40 years ago. Water marks on trees in the slough indicate maximum flooding depth of about 70 cm. Very few baldcypress knees, all < 50 cm tall, are present. Dominant Taxodium and Nyssa aquatica in the plot have pronounced buttressed bases; some of the main stems may be coppice sprouts, although they are generally not multiple-trunked.
