Observation Narrative
Plot located in an area of larger, medium-age forest within a site that was extensively logged 35 or 40 years ago. Site is a low, somewhat depressional flat in the broad floodplain of the Meherrin River, about 600 meters from the main river channel. Hydrology is difficult to assess, but it appears the site is shallowly flooded for periods, perhaps mostly during the winter and spring. The forest composition is similar to that of other winter-flooded terraces on southeastern Virginia rivers, containing hydrophytic oaks, Carya aquatica, Crataegus viridis, and patch-dominance by Leersia lenticularis and sedges. However, in this stand, the principal oaks are Quercus palustris and Q. phellos, rather than Q. lyrata and Q. laurifolia. In this respect, the stand resembles some eastern Piedmont bottomlands.
