Observation Narrative
Plot located in the most diverse portion of an extensive, high-terrace floodplain forest about 400 meters from the main channel of the Nottoway River. Most of this stand was cut-over 40 or 50 years ago and dominant oaks removed. Currently there are very few oaks (Quercus michauxii, Q. pagoda, Q. palustris) in the stand, which is mostly dominated by Liquidambar, Acer rubrum, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica, with other hardwoods scattered. The are of the plot has a more diverse overstory of hickories (Carya ovata, Carya cordiformis), elms (Ulmus americana and U. alata), and Liquidambar, with a few sapling oaks present. Floristically, it is probably more representative of the potential natural vegetation on this site.
