Observation Narrative ? Plot located on a low overwash flat ca. 100 meters from the ocean. On the sampling date, the sand was wet from a recent storm surge. Vegetation is a rather sparse herbaceous community dominated by Salicornia bigelovii that has the characteristic composition of a "salt flat" or "salt panne." Such salt pannes usually occur within, or at the edges of, salt marshes. However, the sample site may be functionally similar if it accumulates salt from evaporation of overwash that has no outlet. It appears likely that the flat used to be a more definite depression associated with a linear interdune pond to the north, but that it is being filled by sand migrating from dunes to the southwest.
