Observation Narrative
Plot captures vegetation in an interdune swale located between a maritime foredune and a low secondary dune in the northern part of Hog Island. Site is about 100 meters from the ocean. It is likely flooded for periods during storm surges and very wet weather; however, its overall hydrology is probably best described as saturated. The vegetation is a dense grassland that is strongly dominated by Spartina patens and contains several lower-cover wetland graminoids, e.g., Andropogon glomeratus ssp. glomeratus, Juncus megacephalus, Fimbristylis caroliniana. A few very low individuals of Myrica cerifera, Baccharis halimifolia, and Iva frutescens are beginning to invade the swale. A small sand hummock inclusion supports a patch of the xerophytic dune grass Ammophila breviligulata.
