Observation Narrative
Habitat is a depression at the back of a maritime salt marsh where it meets a low sand ridge. The north end of Cobb Island is very narrow and rapidly changing, with sand migrating from the eroding ocean side into the marshes of the bay side. Because of these dynamics, the habitat is probably ephemeral and will shift to the west as the sand migration continues. The depression is functionally a salt flat or salt panne, where salt accumulates through evaporation of flood waters. The floristically depauperate vegetation is co-dominated by three halophytes: Sarcocornia perennis, Distichlis spicata, and the low-statured form of Spartina alterniflora. The presence of Limonium carolinianum is notable.
