Observation Narrative ? The habitat is a classic salt flat located at the irregularly flooded back edge of a salt marsh on Magothy Bay, about 300 m from the Chesapeake Bay. This flat is extensive and may be somewhat depressional, although this is hard to detect; at a minimum, microtopography of this site contains numerous sparsely vegetated, slightly depressed areas that apparently accumulate salt through evaporation of flood waters. The substrate is very dense and poorly drained. The floristically depauperate vegetation is a very low herbaceous type containing all three halophytic "saltworts," Salicornia virginica, Salicornia bigelovii, and Sarcocornia perennis, with the latter strongly dominating the stand.
