Observation Narrative
Plot is located in a large, shallow basin between forested dunes, about 400 meters inland from the ocean. Hydrologic regime is very difficult to assess; although the habitat is no doubt inundated at times, the term "saturated" may be a better descriptor of its overall hydrology. Although slightly disturbed by feral pigs, the vegetation is exemplary and dense, consisting of a graminoid assemblage in which Spartina patens, Juncus canadensis, Schoenoplectus pungens, and Eleocharis quadrangulata are all abundant. Beneath these is a suite of low-statured "draw-down" species, including Eleocharis olivacea, Centella erecta, Paspalum distichum, Ludwigia brevipes, Fuirena pumila, Proserpinaca palustris, Dichanthelium longiligulatum, and others. Small, shrub-sized Pinus taeda have become established in this wetland but are probably killed off periodically by salt spray from large storm events.
