Observation Narrative
Plot captures the most open part of a swale between high, xeric dunes and pine woodland located in the middle of the False Cape peninsula, about 600 meters from both the ocean and Back Bay. The habitat is rarely, if ever, flooded but is probably permanently saturated by perched groundwater. The vegetation is characterized by a low to mid-height mixture of graminoids and forbs, the most abundant of which are Andropogon perangustatus, Euthamia caroliniana, Juncus canadensis, Eupatorium hyssopifolium, and Panicum verrucosum. A number of low-statured species such as Fuirena pumila and Xyris difformis var. difformis form mats or colonies under the taller, dominant species. This swale is in pristine condition and is characteristic of the drier end of the interdune wetland gradient at False Cape.
