Observation Narrative
The plot is located on the crest of one of the highest, "great" dunes of the False Cape peninsula, lying more than 500 meters inland from the beach. Although surrounded by woodland and forest, the elevated parts of this dune support somewhat sparse grasslands dominated by Triplasis purpurea and Panicum amarum ssp. amarulum. Several other characteristic dune species are present at low cover. Except for local "blow-outs," the habitat appears to be relatively stable, although it is not clear whether historical land uses and impacts may have contributed to its current openess. Just to the west of the plot, the back-slope of the dune plunges steeply to a deep, forested swale, suggesting a slow migration of sand to the west. Slopes are more gentle to the east.
