Observation Narrative
This site is a large, wet, interdune swale situated about 230 meters from the beach and lying between the primary and secondary ocean-fronting dunes and a back-dune ridge forested with mature live oaks. Slightly drier edges of the swale are dominated by Juncus roemerianus and/or Saccharum giganteum. The plot was positioned in the larger central vegetation zone, where Schoenoplectus pungens forms a tall herbaceous stratum over a dense lower stratum of Centella erecta, Hydrocotyle umbellata, Sacciolepis striata, Dichanthelium longiligulatum, Ludwigia brevipes, Eleocharis olivacea, Proserpinaca palustris, and other "draw-down" species. Most of the localized damage from feral pigs appears to be old and at least partly healed over. This is an exemplary interdune wetland, and probably more seasonally flooded than most at False Cape.
