Observation Narrative
This plot documents a medium-aged alluvial forest on a small-stream floodplain along Little Byrd Creek. The plot was placed where exotics such as Microstegium vimineum and Lonicera japonica were minimally important (though still having significant cover). The overstory has mixed dominance of Liriodendron tulipifera, Celtis occidentalis, Betula nigra, Juglans nigra, Platanus occidentalis, and Liquidambar styraciflua. The shrub layer is dense with colonies of Lindera benzoin. Herbaceous diversity may be somewhat lowered by the dense shade of shrubs. Although the forest is fairly mature compared to many floodplain forests in the region, it likely regenerated on formerly cleared agricultural land decades ago.
