Observation Narrative ? The plot was located on a stable river terrace between a side channel/slough and the main river. The forest is mature with large diameter trees, a well developed understory, and large grape and poison ivy vines climbing into the canopy. Dense shading from the thick sub-canopy and shrub layers may reduce the density and diversity of herbs, but the presence of Trillium sessile, Enemion biternatum, Laportea canadensis, and other species indicates that the clay-rich alluvial soil is fertile. The stand is rarely, if ever, flooded. Since the Vitis was not yet leafed out, cover was estimated for this species.
