Observation Narrative
Plot is situated in a 50 m wide strip of floodplain forest along the Nottoway River. The river channel is about 20 m from the plot. The adjacent uplands and parts of the floodplain away from the river have been clear-cut within the past 5 years. Except for rather high cover of Lonicera japonica, the intact floodplain vegetation contains a rather species-rich assemblage of native plants, and has a very diverse and variable tree canopy. Acer barbatum and Carya cordiformis make up most of the sub-canopy tree recruitment and can be expected to increase at the expense of current canopy co-dominants such as Platanus occidentalis, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Liquidambar styraciflua.
