Observation Narrative
The sample captures a slough / backswamp on a floodplain of the Banister River. The floodplain is a mosaic of elevated hummocks with linear depressions / sloughs running parallel to the river. The plot is about 50 m from the main river channel. In the plot, depressions are dominated by leaf litter and the hummocks are vegetated with vines and woody seedlings. The depressions hold water for part of the year, while the elevated areas are temporarily flooded. The forest in the plot is dominated by large-diameter Quercus phellos and a few, unusual (for this region) Quercus bicolor. The surrounding, better drained forest is also dominated by large oaks but has more sweetgum than in the plot.
0-2 cm leaf litter
2-4 cm organic matter / humus, black
4-20 cm silty clay, gray with abundant orange mottling
20+ cm light gray silty clay with some orange mottling
