Observation Narrative
This small but excellent example of a Piedmont upland depression swamp was first discovered on 2011-04-30, at which time the site was shallowly inundated by perched groundwater and the herb layer was just emerging. A return visit was made in early June for sampling. The site was now dry and the herb layer was a tangle of patchy vines, sedges, grasses, and a few forbs. The overstory of the wetland forest is fairly mature and contains all three oaks (Quercus bicolor, Q. palustris, Q. phellos) characteristic of these habitats in northern Virginia. The swamp occupies a small (estimated 0.3-acre) depression surrounded upland oak-hickory forest; when fully inundated, it drains into a small stream on the west side.
NOTE: The Dichanthelium dichotomum with cover "6" in the plot is var. ramulosum.
