Observation Narrative
This forested wetland occupies an elongate, several-acre depression in an upland terrace bordering the south side of Chotank Creek. Hydrology and vegetation composition are similar to that documented in plot CHOT011, but the forest stand is larger and younger. The largest trees are Quercus phellos and Liquidambar styraciflua 35-40 cm DBH. Carex crinita and C. festucacea are the two most abundant herbs, but cover < 5% each. Most of the ground surface consists of water-stained leaf litter and large patches of bryophytes (mostly Sphagnum) that also cover small logs and exposed tree roots.
