Observation Narrative
The toe-slope of a low ridge along Mountain Run features several areas where abundant groundwater is discharged in seeps and springs. This plot is located in one of the larger toe-slope seeps, and captures an open forest with large patches of Symplocarpus foetidus and Carex bromoides ssp. bromoides dominating the dense herb growth. This habitat lies slightly above the floodplain, high enough that it is rarely - if ever - touched by overland flooding. The trees are rather small, consisting mostly of Acer rubrum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and F. americana. Carpinus is abundant in the understory.
